DHS Program AI Chatbot

The Demographic Health Survey program needed a smarter way to help site visitors navigate a vast library of survey data, technical documentation, and user forum knowledge. Blue Raster implemented an AI-powered chatbot that delivers immediate, context-aware answers drawn directly from the program’s own content, including PDF reports, curated forum responses, and authoritative program documentation.

An Intelligent Digital Library

Built on retrieval-augmented generation, the chatbot draws only from verified content, (PDFs, forum responses, and program documentation) always citing and linking to its sources. Never speculating. Never pulling from the open web.

Built on a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture, the solution was designed to be accurate and trustworthy by design. The AI was instructed to cite and link to its sources at all times, drawing only from verified content rather than speculating or pulling from the open web. It functions as an intelligent digital library, guiding visitors through complex information on spatial statistics and health demographics in a way that feels conversational and intuitive.

The solution was built on AWS for hosting, OpenAI for natural language understanding, Flowise for AI workflow management, and pgvector on PostgreSQL for vector search and retrieval. The result is a chatbot that does more than answer questions. It deepens engagement, reduces the burden on support resources, and delivers a personalized experience that reflects the depth and credibility of the DHS Program itself.
